Verreynne pays tribute to Cobras fans, peers after Awards haul

Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras wicket-keeper batsman Kyle Verreynne has paid tribute to the Cobras fans and his peers after he walked away with four of the seven awards at the end of season Awards function on Friday evening.

Verreynne won the Fans’ Player of the Year, 4 Day Series Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and the big one on the night, the overall Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras Player of the Year for the 2020/2021 season, and ‘Scholesy’ as he is affectionately known, couldn’t have been prouder.

“I don’t think it has quite sunk in how well I have done this season to be honest, but just really proud and happy with my achievements. I think it probably was bitter-sweet to not have any silverware with the Cobras to match my awards, but overall, it was a very special evening and appreciate all the support and recognition,” he said.

He had a word of thanks to the Cobras fans who voted him as their Player of the Year on the social media platforms, including the Cricket South Africa app as well as his peers. “Two awards I really cherish the most are the Fans’ Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year. When the people who are watching you and the people you are trying to entertain, appreciate what you have done, and they vote you as their player of the year, it is really special. Also, to be voted for my peers, the guys who play with you, see the work you put in day in and day out, to get their recognition and seal of approval, that is something special. I’m just really proud and honoured.”

“I’ve put in a lot of hard work over the past few seasons and I’m glad to have put in some performances on the board for the Cobras, so to receive recognition is really special, really appreciate it.”

Verreynne joined some illustrious names who have previously won the Player of the Year Award and the achievement didn’t go unnoticed by the 23-year-old.

“To play for a franchise with such a rich history, to win the awards and see the names before me who have won the trophies, is really special, goosebump feeling looking back at some of the names,” he concluded.

Verreynne has joined up with the Proteas as they take on Pakistan in an ODI and T20 Series in a bio-secure environment in April.
