NEWLANDS – World Sports Betting Western Province Women are bracing for a stern test this weekend as they prepare to face a formidable DP World Lions Women side at WSB Newlands, with batting coach Linton Phillips fully aware of the fine margins that could decide the contest.

Emphasising the importance of execution, Phillips believes the clash will ultimately come down to which team handles the fundamentals better on the day.

Phillips also highlighted fielding as a decisive factor, stressing that sharp work in the field – along with disciplined management of the powerplay and middle overs – will be key to gaining the upper hand at WSB Newlands.

“We’re coming up against a strong Lions side this weekend and I do feel that the team that does the basics the best this weekend will come out on top with a win, said Phillips.

“I also feel that fielding is going to play a huge part in the game this weekend, so the main focus would be fielding and how the team gets through the powerplay and especially the middle overs at Newlands.”

Both the Hollywoodbets Pro50 and Pro20 matches taking place on Saturday and Sunday will be livestreamed on the Cricket South Africa YouTube page, with play scheduled to begin at 10h00 on both days.

Building on that mindset, Phillips revealed that the week’s preparation has centred on regaining rhythm and sharpening execution across the board.

With standards set internally, the emphasis has been on raising the bar in every department ahead of this weekend’s clashes.

“So, the focus around getting back into the swing of things and focusing hard on fielding this week has been a main focus,” added Phillips.

“Also focusing on just being a bit more excellent in all three disciplines of the game so that when we do walk out on the field on Saturday and Sunday the level of excellence that we put out there is of the standard we portray.”

He also underlined the significance of playing at WSB Newlands, describing the occasion as both inspiring and motivating for the squad.

With the historic venue set to be the centre stage this weekend, he believes the presence of supporters could provide the extra edge needed in a tightly contested encounter.

“Playing at Newlands is massive,” he said. “It’s a dream for many and I think to get the fans out will just give the players so much more confidence to go out and actually perform and show their appreciation via their performance for the fans that have come out to support them.”
