Back-to-back centuries for Steyn as SA Women Emerging defeat Zim

SA Women Emerging beat Zimbabwe by 90 runs to take a 2-0 series lead in the five-match ODI series being played in Bulawayo.

A combined batting effort from Andrie Steyn and Tazmin Brits secured a comfortable 90-run win over the Zimbabwe Women side that was hoping to bounce back after the defeat in the opening encounter two days ago.

Chasing 297, Zimbabwe faltered in the first over when they lost opener Chiedza Dhururu for a duck. They were soon 3-25 as Masabata Klaas (3 for 34) and Micaela Andrews got rid of the top order to give the visitors an advantage. Modester Mupachikwa 95 (130) and Josephine Nkomo stitched together a stable 124-run partnership before the latter was dismissed for a commendable 60 (100).

The SA Emerging bowling attack were consistent and restricted the hosts to 207/7 in the 50 overs.

South Africa had earlier chosen to bat after winning the toss and their opening duo of Andrie Steyn and Tazmin Brits put up an impressive 129-run partnership that set the foundation for the visitors. The duo were destructive from the onset and steered the SA side past the 100-run mark with Steyn continuing her impressive form, scoring an unbeaten 135 of 142 balls and her partner contributing a blistering 84 from 59 deliveries.

Once this partnership was broken, Zimbabwe Women did not let any batter settle down as the visitors took their total to 297, which proved to be too much for the hosts.

The third ODI will take place again at the Queens Sports Club on Saturday, 22 May.
