Western Province Cricket Association and Sport Skills for Life Skills Forge Landmark Partnership to Develop the Next Generation of Cricketers

August 2026

NEWLANDS – The Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) and Sport Skills for Life Skills (SS4LS) have entered into a strategic three-year partnership aimed at strengthening cricket talent development while ensuring young athletes achieve both their sporting and academic ambitions.

The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding effective from 1 October 2026, creates a structured pathway for aspiring male and female cricketers to excel on the field while pursuing educational opportunities through the SS4LS scholarship and bursary programmes.

WPCA will work closely with SS4LS, which is based at the University of the Western Cape and focuses on funding the academic pursuits of talented young cricketers. Together, the organisations will align player development, coaching, talent identification, academic support, sports science, performance analysts, medical services and other career pathways.

A key feature of the partnership is the collaborative approach to talent identification and retention, helping to ensure that promising cricketers within the Western Province system are provided with opportunities to thrive while remaining connected to the region’s cricket structures. The organisations will also jointly support player development plans, strength and conditioning programmes, medical management and pathways into provincial and professional cricket.

The partnership will further support the growth of the Mpumelelo Project, an SS4LS initiative focused on creating educational and cricketing opportunities for talented young players from township communities in Cape Town. WPCA has committed to supporting the programme and assisting with fundraising efforts to expand its impact.

Corrie van Zyl, CEO of WPCA, said: “This partnership reflects our commitment to creating sustainable pathways for talented young cricketers. By working alongside Sport Skills for Life Skills, we are ensuring that players have access to world-class cricket development while also obtaining the education and life skills necessary to succeed beyond the game.”

Nic Kock, Executive Director of SS4LS said: “We are committed in strengthening the social impact of WPCA within marginalised communities in the Western Cape. It is very satisfying seeing participants and alumni of the SS4LS programme breaking into the men’s (Lizaad Williams, Mihlali Mpongwana) and women’s (Kayla Reyneke and Leah Jones) Proteas sides.”

The partnership marks a significant investment in the future of cricket in the Western Cape and demonstrates both organisations’ dedication to transforming lives through sport, education and opportunity.
