CSA 1 Day Cup Final

DP World Lions won by 62 runs

DP World Lions 358/5 (48 overs) Six Gun Grill Western Province 296 all out (43 overs)

Wayne Parnell and his WP team fell agonisingly short of a first title in 8 years at the Wanderers on Thursday 29th December. After an excellent CSA 1 Day Cup season for WP, winning 5 of their 7 games, the dominant Lions were too strong for the matadors in blue at the Bullring.

Story of the Day

WP won the delayed toss, after heavy rain in the morning. Play finally got underway over an hour late, with Parnell  opting to bowl first, in a match reduced to 48 overs per side.

The Lions dominated the early exchanges, with opening pair Ryan Rickelton (75,63b,14×4) and Joshua Richards (94,102b,9×4,2×6) compiling a rapid 142-run partnership on an outstanding batting surface. George Linde (10-0-65-1) bowled Rickelton for WP’s initial breakthrough.

The pressure from the batting side did not let up, and it took a piece of fielding brilliance by Beuran Hendricks to dismiss Richards, taking a stunning one-handed catch off the bowling of Nandre Burger (8-0-75-1). At 213/2 there was a sniff of a recovery for WP, but the Lions plundered the attack, with excellent contributions by Reeza Hendricks (69,64b,6×4,1×6), Mitchell van Buuren (62,36b,6×4,2×6) and Evan Jones (30). When the early evening Highveld dust settled, they had amassed 358/5.

All the bowlers struggled on the flat track, and the five wickets were shared between Linde, Burger, Hendricks (9-0-54-1), Tshepo Moreki (7-1-48-1) and Parnell (8-0-69-1).

Chasing the Lions’ highest-ever score in List A cricket was not going to be easy. WP made a valiant effort to get over the line, with Jono Bird (13) and Tony de Zorzi (88,69b,9×4,3×6) setting a blistering pace at the start of the innings. De Zorzi and Eddie Moore (82,82b,5×4,3×6) then scored the partnership of the innings, with 113 for the 2nd wicket.

The outstanding de Zorzi was visibly mortified when he was out for an excellent 88. Zubayr Hamza (0) got a brilliant ball from MotM Lutho Sipamla (10-1-71-5), before Daniel Smith (24) and Moore combined for a 60-run stand. Moore’s defiant knock came to an end through Reeza Hendricks (3-0-18-3), and within 2 balls Smith had also departed. Linde (42,32b,2×4,1×6) and Mihlali Mpongwana (15) struck some mighty blows, but when Mpongwana was out (260/6), Linde’s continued heroics could not get WP over the line.

It was an outstanding 1 Day Cup Series for WP, with de Zorzi and Moore excelling with the bat. Linde and Moreki were particularly impressive in the bowling department, where the WP attack was widely regarded as the best in the competition. A word too for wicketkeeper Daniel Smith, who ended with the most scalps in the series.

Congratulations to the Lions for their second consecutive 1 Day Cup trophy.

After a 1 Day Cup Series that will live long in the memories of those who traveled the journey with the team, all that remains is to say well done to Salieg Nackerdien and his entire squad of management and players.
