Four-in-a-Row as Dominant Six Gun Grill WP top CSA’s 1 Day Cup Table
Sunday December 11th, Six Gun Grill Newlands
It was another outstanding display with the ball and bat that set up a crushing 7 wicket win for Six Gun Grill Western Province over the Momentum Multiply Titans at the picturesque Newlands Cricket Ground.
A pacy Nandre Burger (7-3-21-3) and that man George Linde (8-0-46-3) led the way with the ball to restrict the Titans to 157 all out in exactly 39 overs. Man of the Match Tony de Zorzi (83no off 92,6×4,3×6) then continued his sublime run of form with the bat, with significant contributions from Yaseen Vallie (30 off 57,2×4) and Gavin Kaplan (22 off 22,1×4,2×6).
WP achieved the target with plenty of overs left in the bank, with only 31 needed to get to the total of 158. This secured the second Bonus Point of the competition for WP, and ensured that they remain top of the log with 18 points from 4 games.
Story of the Day
Titans Captain Sibs Makhanya won the toss and elected to bat on the same pitch used for the match against the NW Dragons on Friday 9th. Despite a rapid and exciting start from Dewald Brevis and Jiveshan Pillay, it was the fiery Burger who dismissed both in his second over to reduce the Titans to 24/2.
From that point onwards it was a struggle for the Titans, as the wickets tumbled. Only Aiden Markram (28), Donovan Ferreira (30) (including two mighty sixes) and Corbin Bosch (36) could muster any kind of score for the visitors, with them eventually falling to their third-lowest total vs WP in List A cricket.
Apart from the heroics of Burger and Linde, Mihlali Mpongwana (6-0-24-2) and Tsepho Moreki (6-0-22-2) were the other wicket takers. Mpongwana’s “golden arm” was decisive, with the crucial wicket of Markram in his first over. Moreki effectively mopped up the tail, as he did against the NW Dragons. Mention must go to Wayne Parnell (6-3-16-0) who was once again the epitomy of economy, with Junaid Dawood (6-0-28-0) the only other bowler called upon by Captain Parnell.
The appreciative and vocal crowd of just over 1,000 spectators then witnessed a Tony de Zorzi masterclass. The left-hander paced his innings brilliantly, and broke the back of the challenge, as well as the spirits of the Titans attack. Junior Dala, Aaron Phangiso and Tabraiz Shamsi took a wicket apiece, with Jono Bird (8), Vallie and Daniel Smith (4) their victims.
Coach Salieg Nackerdien’s team made the chase a lot less stressful than Friday’s struggle against the NW Dragons, and he will be happy that there is now some clear air between his charges and the following pack on the 1 Day Cup Table.
The log-leaders now head to Gqeberha on Wednesday 14th December, for their 5th match in the series, a 13h00 start against the Dafabet Warriors at St Georges Park. We are backing our #BoysinBlue to come home with more points in the bag.
