Pieter Malan signs for Warwickshire
March 2021
Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras batsman Pieter Malan has signed as an overseas player for English County side Warwickshire.
Malan, who has been a mainstay at the top of the order for the Cobras the past few seasons, earning his long-awaited Test call-up to Proteas for the New Year’s Test at Six Gun Grill Newlands in January 2020 in the process, will join the Bears at the conclusion of the South African domestic cricket season. He will be available for their red-ball cricket, the County Championship which gets underway on 8 April.
“It’s always been an ambition of mine to play county cricket,” said Malan.
“I can’t wait to get started with the Bears. I’m very excited to be afforded the opportunity at a top county with a proud history like Warwickshire.”
Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras CEO Albertus Kennedy: “Pieter Malan has been an absolute professional even before he signed his first professional contract with the Cobras. His work ethic and determination, is unmatched in South African cricket and we wish him everything of the best for his County stint, it is just reward for his efforts.”
“Pieter has a very impressive batting average across all three formats,” said Warwickshire director of cricket Paul Farbrace. “He has been unlucky not to play more international cricket.
“We have got some very talented young batsmen in our top order and for them to work with, and bat out in the middle with someone of Pieter’s experience and quality will be brilliant for them.
“Pieter is also a very impressive man, friendly, likeable and polite, but with real inner steel and with a point to prove. I know how much he wants to come to the Bears and score some serious runs.”
