Vallie-inspired Six Gun Grill WP suffer CSA 1 Day Cup setback against Dafabet Warriors

December 2022

St George’s Park, Gqeberha, 14th December 2022

A brave half-century from Yaseen Vallie (72 off 98,10×4) and some fiery fast bowling from Nandre Burger (9-0-23-1) were not enough to stave off a first defeat for Six Gun Grill Western Province in their fifth CSA 1 Day Cup match. Table-toppers WP had a tough day at the office at St George’s Park, as their run of four successive wins came to an end.

Having played five matches, WP now need one more win from their remaining two matches against the DP World Lions (Sunday 18th December 10h00 at Six Gun Grill Newlands) and the Gbets Rocks (Friday 23rd December 13h00 at Eurolux Boland Park) to secure a berth in the final. If they win both, a home final on Thursday 29th December is a distinct possibility.

Story of the Day

Dafabet Warriors Captain Diego Rosier won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first on a slowish surface with a tinge of green showing through. WP suffered a disastrous start as the in-form Tony de Zorzi (0) was caught at slip off Glenton Stuurman with the third ball of the afternoon. Jono Bird (26,3×4,1×6) was joined by Vallie, and they confidently took the score to 64 at just less than 5 runs per over, before Bird was bowled by Man of the Match and former WP player Akhona Mnyaka (8-0-20-3). Despite Vallie’s heroics, the rest of the WP batting line-up struggled, with only Daniel Smith (12), Gavin Kaplan (14) and Mihlali Mpongwana (10) getting into double figures. The innings ended on 155 in the 40th over, setting a modest target for the home team.

Wayne Parnell (7-0-41-1), George Linde (3-0-22-1) and Junaid Dawood (5-0-23-1) ably supported Burger in the attack on the Warriors batting. The task for the bowlers ended up being too much, even with the failures of the Warriors trio of Wihan Lubbe (16), Jordan Herrman (5) and Tristan Stubbs (19). Impressive half-centuries from Rosier (52 off 68,8×4) and Matthew Breetzke (50* off 47,3×4,2×6) cheered the St George’s faithful, as the Warriors went to their first win of the CSA 1 Day Cup, eventually triumphing by 6 wickets in the 32nd over.
