WPCA mourns the passing of Denys Hobson

NEWLANDS – Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) is deeply saddened by the passing of esteemed former Western Province and South African unofficial Test leg-spin bowler Denys Hobson.

Born in Gqeberha, Hobson was a talented right-handed batsman and skilful leg-break bowler who proudly represented both Western Province and Eastern Cape during a distinguished domestic career.

He featured in 105 First-Class matches and 18 List A games, taking an impressive 374 First-Class wickets and 17 List A wickets, cementing his legacy as one of the finest spinners of his era.

His early promise was evident when he was selected to represent South African Schools in 1971, marking the beginning of an exceptional cricket journey.

Hobson’s passing is a profound loss to cricket in the Western Province and across the South African cricketing community. His contributions, professionalism, and passion for the game have left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of watching or working with him.

WPCA President Johannes Adams shared heartfelt condolences with the Hobson family: “Denys Hobson was not only a remarkable cricketer but also a respected figure in our cricketing family,” said Adams.

“His dedication to Western Province cricket and his humble, dignified presence will always be remembered. We honour his legacy and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life.”
